Mastoidectomy Open Access Articles

A mastoidectomy may be a widely used surgery, usually performed with a tympanoplasty, to eradicate disease within the tympanic cavity and mastoid. It’s considered to be an efficient method of treatment in cases of chronic ear infections immune to antibiotic therapy. The utilization of a mastoidectomy as a way to determine drainage of a sophisticated infection of the ear has little controversy; however, the utilization of a mastoidectomy to treat chronic drainage or suppuration from otitis remains a problem of debate. The rationale for a mastoidectomy combined with a tympanoplasty is that it can allow the surgical debridement of infected and devitalized tissues which will cause persistent tympanic cavity disease, also as reconstruction of the aerated mastoid cavity. The mastoid alveolus system acts primarily as a buffer to pressure changes within the tympanic cavity, and therefore the presence of an aerated mastoid greatly increases the quantity of the centre ear system, which may moderate pressure changes within the tympanic cavity. Thus, during a well-aerated mastoid, significant changes within the tympanic cavity pressure will likely have little effect on the centre ear and eardrum.
