Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

Esophageal adenocarcinoma findings from the chronic exposure of the squamous epithelium to gastric contents. When the GEJ is correctly defined by histology as the proximal limit of gastric oxyntic epithelium, adenocarcinomas of the esophagus and what is currently believed to be the “gastric cardia” are all esophageal in origin. Many of these persons are asymptomatic or have mild indicators of GERD. These are presently incorrectly categorized by many as adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia. The factors that are documented as being associated with an increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma involve visible CLE, intestinal metaplasia in CLE, severity and duration of symptomatic GERD, male gender, Caucasian race, family history, regular use of acid-reducing drugs, obesity, smoking, and alcohol use.
