Chemoprevention

Chemoprevention is also known as chemoprophylaxis which refers to the administration of a medication to prevent disease or infection. For example, antibiotics may be administered to patients with immune system disorders to prevent bacterial infections (especially opportunistic infections). Antibiotics may also be given to healthy individuals to limit the spread of an epidemic, or to patients who have repeated infections (such as infections in the urinary tract) to prevent recurrence. It may also refer to Heparin administration and Prevents deep venous thrombosis in patients hospitalized. Chemoprophylaxis is suggested in some cases to prevent the spread of an existing infection in an individual to a new organ system, since intrathecal chemotherapy is given in patients with malignancy to prevent further infection.
