16. Pulmonary Development Biology

Lung development starts within 2–3 weeks of conception and completed when thoracic growth increases. In Human lung morphogenesis occurs before birth and during infancy under the control of a genetic program which is modulated by endocrine and physical factors. Lung development occurs by branching morphogenesis which is closely related to intrinsic growth factors. After the bronchial tree has been remained, lung growth occurs by the expansion of lung tissue rather than by the establishment of new structural units. In the fetus, the development of major lung components including the vascular bed, alveoli, and innervation occurs in parallel by the time of birth, the lung is capable of effective gas exchange. Since the earlier stage of lung development, there is accompanying of blood circulation. In the adult the pulmonary arteries in the lung are closely associated with the airways.
