Hereditary Breast Cancer Scholarly Journal
About 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are a contribution from hereditary, which means they are a direct result directly unwanted gene changes (mutations) passed on from a parent.
The mutations in the genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most common cause of hereditary breast cancer. Generally in normal cells, these genes produce proteins that repair damaged DNA. Mutated in these genes lead to abnormal cell growth, which finally turn to cancer.
An inherited mutated copy of either gene from a parent predicts higher risk of breast cancer. On average, a woman with mutation in these genes has 70% chance of getting breast cancer by age 80. Women with mutations in one of these genes also have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer and some others also.
