Tissue Regeneration Open Access Journals

Tissue regeneration shares certain processes with epimorphic regeneration. Both involve an injury that makes a morphological discontinuity. Both undergo a loss of specialization within the cells destined to repair the damage. In both cases these cells proliferate and migrate to the wound site where they then re-differentiate into the acceptable types needed for repair. Tissue regeneration represents a paradigm of somatic cell function within the adult. Although stem cells are identified in most mammalian tissues and organs, the power of those tissues to differentiate is remarkably different and is assumed to depend both on extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms. Among the latter, epigenetic mechanisms regulate the dramatic reprogramming of somatic cell function that happens upon injury, which results in the reactivation of otherwise silent developmental programs.
