Multiple Sclerosis Recent Development
Multiple sclerosis is a neurologic disorder of young adults, named as an autoimmune, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The initial therapeutic strategies were directed at immune modulation. High-dose corticosteroids were used for acute relapses and parenteral interferon-β, glatiramer acetate for disease modification are moderately effective. Studies reveal that an inflammatory pathology characterizes the early relapsing stage of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis disease-modifying therapies developing to specifically target the underlying pathology at each stage of the disease. Oral medications, monoclonal antibodies are used to reduce inflammation in relapsing multiple sclerosis and agents to promote neuroprotection in progressive multiple sclerosis.
