Congenital Disease Scholarly Peer Review Journal
A birth defect, also known as a congenital anomaly, is a disease that arises at birth whatever the cause. Birth defects can cause physical , intellectual, or developmental disabilities. The impairments can vary from mild to extreme. Birth defects are classified into two major types: structural disorders where problems are found with the structure of a part of the body, and functional disorders where there are issues with how a part of the body works. This includes metabolic and degenerative disorders. Some birth defects include both functional and structural disorders. Birth defects can occur during pregnancy due to genetic or chromosomal abnormalities, exposure to certain medicines or chemicals, or other infection. Risk factors include folate deficiency, drinking alcohol or smoking during pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes and a mother older than 35 years old.
