Articles On Leukemogenesis

Leukemias are monoclonal diseases that are caused by cells in the hematopoietic stem compartment and the progenitor cells. Leukemogenesis is an evolutionary mechanism associated with current models of carcinogenesis, involving multiple distinct genetic and epigenetic events.A leukemia is called leukemogenesis, while a myeloma is called myelomagenesis, and a lymphoma is called lymphomagenesis. The irregular exchange of genetic material between two separate chromosomes requires repeated chromosome translocations. While only half of HCs display fairly subtle genetic aberrations such as minor chromosomal deletions or point mutations, an estimated 50% of leukemias and lymphomas are associated with significant chromosomal disturbances. Mechanisms designed to maintain genetic stability in the cell can be compromised, opening the door to accumulating mutations.
