Thermal Pollution

Thermal pollution, also known as "thermal enrichment," is that the degradation of water quality by any process that changes ambient or moderate water temperature. A common use for pollution is that the use of water as a coolant by power plants and industrial manufacturers. Other causes of thermal pollution include soil erosion. This will increase water and expose it to sunlight. When water used as a coolant in industries, is returned to the environment at a better temperature, the drastic change in temperature diminishes oxygen supply and affects ecosystem composition. Fish and other organisms which are adapted to particular temperature range are killed by a change in water temperature (either a rapid increase or decrease) which is referred to as "thermal shock."

Thermal pollution can also increase the rate of aquatic animals, as enzyme activity, leading to these organisms consuming more food during a shorter time than if their environment weren't changed. As a result, food chains of the old and new environments could also be compromised.
