Respiratory Tract Infections New Research Articles
Acute infections of the respiratory tract are the most common infections of the human host and account for a large proportion of patients seen by the practicing pediatrician Although the great majority of these infections involve the upper respiratory tract, infections of the lower respiratory tract are sufficiently frequent as .to present almost daily problems to the physician. In so-called developed countries it is apparent that most lower respiratory infections in children are caused by viruses or Mycoplasma pneumonia. Unfortunately, some lower respiratory infections are caused by bacteria other than mycoplasma. pneumonia and require different antimicrobial therapy. The problem is t9 distinguish those caused by bacteria that should be treated with a specific antibiotic from those that are not and require only supportive management. Rapid diagnostic techniques developed for the detection of microbial antigens will be of help in determining the cause.
