Horseshoe Vortex New Impact Factor

In the section on the outside flow of horseshoe, vortices shed into two corner vortices. One of the corner vortexes stays on the convex surface and the other vortex is pushed across the flow section moving from the concave surface toward the convex surface. The rotational nature of these corner vortices continues to carry warming flue gas from the mainstream to the divider, warming the corner between the airfoil root and the end wall. Which shows the harm inflicted on the leading edge by the horseshoe and corner vortices. To mitigate this increased heat-load, several approaches have been made.

increase the end wall film cooling coverage, add pin-fin cooling below the endplate, utility CFD to guide the design of 3-D circuit end wall geometry.
