Environmental Impact Assessment

Impact Assessment on Environment is said to be a process of evaluating the favourable environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, by taking considerations from inter-related cultural, socio-economic, and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse.

UNEP defines Impact Assessment on Environment as a tool wont to detect the social, environmental, and economic impacts of a development before decision-making. It aims to predict environmental impacts at an early stage in project planning and style, find ways and means to scale back adverse impacts, shape projects to suit the local environment and present the options and predictions to decision-makers.

Impact Assessment or Environment in India is statutorily backed by the Environment Protection Act, 1986 which contains various provisions on Impact Assessment on Environment methodology and process.

Importance of EIA:

• EIA allows the decision makers to analyse the effect of developmental activities on the environment well before the developmental project is implemented.

• EIA provides a cost effective method to eliminate or minimize the adverse impact of developmental projects.

• EIA links environment with development for environmentally safe and sustainable development.
