Oryza Sativa

It is the grain with the second highest worldwide production after Zea mays. japonica is short-grained and high in amylopectin so that the grains stick together when cooked, which distinguishes it from subsp. Oryza sativa subsp. japonica is grown in dry fields, mainly in temperate or colder climates such as Japan. Oryza sativa has a haploid chromosome number of 12, containing 370 Mb with about 36,000 protein-coding genes. Rice was an obvious choice for the first whole genome sequencing of a cereal crop. It is the smallest of the major cereal crop genomes and is the easiest to transform genetically. This is commonly called as Asian rice. According to a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) report,1 453.4 million tons of rice was consumed worldwide in 2010/2011.The experiment was aimed at assessing the response of 30 rice genotypes to NaCl stress at four salinity levels Control, 4dS/m, 6dS/m and 12dS/m at early seedling stage.

A total of 10 genotypes (including Pokkali, IR64, NERICA L12, CK73) were found to be tolerant at all salinity level. The multiple correlation coefficients (R2) at 6dS/m was 34.5% and 12dS/m was 52.8%. Genotypes are more affected by salinity levels at 12ds/m and above. It’s similar to peanut oil, with high percentages of fatty acids—which, by the way, makes it a perfect skin moisturizer!
