Oceanography: Open Access
Oceanography has been transformed through the use of fluorescence to assess biology. Light-absorbing pigments cause by many organisms to the naturally fluoresce. Mostly, but not exclusively, these pigments are related with an photosynthesizing organisms, such as algae, aquatic vascular plants, and aerobic anoxygenic photosynthetic (AAP) microorganisms. Fluorescence is most f the commonly detected as the emission that follows ‘active’ excitation using an actinic light source. One of the major innovations for oceanography occurred in the 1960s with the detection of actively made by chlorophyll a fluorescence in situ. Chlorophyll a is contained by all algae and cyanobacteria and thus make available a measure of abundance. Though, the characteristic environmental temperatures and the chlorophyll a fluorescence release the signature largely originates from the oxygen evolving photosystem II.
