Impeller Blade

An impeller is a rotating component equipped with blades or vanes used in turbomachinery (centrifugal pumps) which transfers energy from the motor that drives the pump to the fluid being pumped by accelerating the fluid outwards from the center of rotation. Usually made of steel or stainless steel, some lower grade pumps will have brass/bronze material or some sort of plastic. An impeller is usually a short cylinder with an inlet which is open (called an eye) to accept incoming fluid, vanes to push the fluid radially, and a splined, keyed, or threaded bore to accept a drive shaft.  Flow deflection at the impeller vanes allows mechanical power (to be converted into pump power output. It is cheaper to cast an impeller and its spindle as one piece, rather than separately.
