Downs Syndrome Review Articles
Down syndrome may be a genetic disease caused when abnormal cellular division leads to an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of mongolism. Down syndrome varies in severity among individuals, causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays. It's the commonest genetic chromosomal disorder and explanation for learning disabilities in children. It also commonly causes other medical abnormalities, including heart and gastrointestinal disorders. Those with mongolism nearly always have physical and intellectual disabilities. As adults, their mental abilities are typically almost like those of an 8- or 9-year-old. They also typically have poor immune function and usually reach developmental milestones at a later age. The amyloid precursor protein gene, APP, that's mutated or duplicated in some familial AD (FAD), is encoded by HSA21, over expressed in DS, and a candidate for causing AD in DS.
