Diabetes is a disorder that impairs the capacity of the body to absorb blood glucose, otherwise referred to as blood sugar. The hormone insulin transfers sugar from the blood into the cells for storage or energy use. Diabetes means the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or can't use the insulin it produces effectively. Untreated high diabetes blood sugar will damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs. High blood sugar damages all of your body's organs and tissues. The higher the sugar in blood, and the longer live with it, the greater the chance of complications. Having too much glucose in your blood can lead to health issues over time. While diabetes has no cure, you can take measures to control your diabetes and stay healthy. Often people call diabetes "a drop of sugar" or "borderline diabetes."
