Cortisol Peer-review Journals Open Access
Cortisol may be a steroid , within the glucocorticoid class of hormones. When used as a medicine , it's referred to as hydrocortisone. it's produced in many animals, mainly by the zona fasciculate of the cortex within the adrenal . it's produced in other tissues in lower quantities. it's released with a diurnal cycle and its release is increased in response to worry and low blood-glucose concentration. It functions to extend blood glucose through gluconeogenesis, to suppress the system , and to assist within the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. It also decreases bone formation.
Cortisol is that the major glucocorticoid mediating the body As stress reaction to physical and psychological strains; this stress response is usually considered a helpful survival mechanism. Cortisol secretion can increase within minutes in acute stress situations, and may occupy high levels for long periods, days or months, in chronic disease conditions. Cortisol levels in blood, serum, and urine are heavily increased (10-20 times) in critically ill patients, e.g., those with sepsis or other life-threatening diseases .
