Bioaccumulation Scholarly Peer-review Journal
Bioaccumulation is that the gradual accumulation of substances, like pesticides or alternative chemicals, in an organism. Bioaccumulation happens once an organism absorbs a substance at a rate quicker than that at the substance which is lost by catabolism and excretion. Thus, the longer the biological half-life of a toxic substance, the larger the risk of chronic poisoning, even if environmental levels of the poisonous substance aren't terribly high. Bioaccumulation, for instance in fish, are often predicted by models. Hypotheses for molecular size cutoff criteria to be used as bioaccumulation potential indicators aren't supported by data. Biotransformation will powerfully modify bioaccumulation of chemicals in an organism.
Bioaccumulation uptake refers to from all sources combined (e.g. water, food, air, etc.), whereas bioconcentration refers to uptake and accumulation of a substance from water alone
