Shoot Culture

Shoot culture is the most common method of micropropagation. It is the culture of terminal portion of a shoot comprising of meristem together with primordial and developing leaves and adjacent stem tissues. Meristem culture is the in vitro culture in general a shiny special dome-like structure measuring less than 0.1 mm in length and only one or two pairs of the youngest leaf primordia, most often cut out from the shoot apex. Shoot cultures can regenerate plantlets by either adventitious or axillary methods. Axillary shoots come from buds formed at each node. Adventitous shoots arise from callus or plant pieces lacking a node such as flower stems or leaf discs.
