Renal Osteodystrophy Open Access Articles

Renal osteodystrophy is defined as an alteration of bone morphology with chronic kidney disease. It is one measure of skeletal component of the systemic disorder of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder. The term renal osteodystrophy was coined after an association was identified between bone disease and kidney failure. The osteodystrophy is defined on the basis of turnover and mineralization such as mild, slight increase in turn over and normal mineralization, osteitis fibrosis, increased turnover and normal mineralization, osteomalacia, decreased turnover and abnormal mineralization a dynamic, decreased turnover and cellularity and mixed increased turnover with abnormal mineralization. A Kidney Disease reports suggested that bone biopsies in patients should be characterized by determining bone turnover, mineralization, and volume.
