The stem, black, and cereal rusts are caused by the fungus rust and are a major disease moving cereal crops. Crop species that are plagued by the disease include bread wheat, durum wheat, barley and triticale. These diseases have affected cereal farming throughout history. The annual repetition of stem rust of wheat in North Indian plains was discovered by professor. K.C. Mehta. Since the Fifties, wheat strains bred to be resistant to stem rust became available. Fungicides effective against stem rust are available further.
