Protein Calorie Malnutrition Top Journals

Malnutrition refers to getting too little or too much of certain nutrients. It can lead to serious health issues, including stunted growth, eye problems, diabetes and heart disease. Malnutrition affects billions of people worldwide.

The most severe malnutrition problems are associated with Protein-Calorie Malnutrition (PCM), also known as Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM), which occurs in both chronic and acute forms. Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) for PEM includes six clinical parameters, followed by a personal judgment as to whether the patient has (A) no malnutrition, (B) possible or mild malnutrition or (C) significant malnutrition. PCM is estimated at 4% in the community setting;29% in sub-acute care facilities; 27% and 38% among the hospitalized elderly aged 60 – 79 and aged 80 and older, respectively; and 30–40% among those aged 70 years of age and older who have been hospitalized for over two weeks.
