Postoperative Coagulopathy

During hemostasis, coagulation factors participate in a complex cascade culminating in the generation of thrombin, which catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Fibrinogen plays a critical role in achieving and maintaining hemostasis; it serves as the precursor to fibrin, an essential component of blood clots. Subsequent polymerization forms fibrin strands, which become covalently cross-linked by activated coagulation factors. Physiological hemostasis is a balance between coagulation (clot formation) and fibrinolysis (clot breakdown) to protect against extreme situations such as hemorrhage and thrombosis. An imbalance in physiological hemostasis leads to coagulopathy, a condition characterized by the inability of the blood to clot.
