The word "bacteria" features a negative connotation, but the bacteria actually perform many vital functions for organisms and within the environment. For example, plants need bacteria within the soil so as to grow. The overwhelming majority of bacteria are harmless to people and a few strains are even beneficial. In the human alimentary canal , good bacteria aid in digestion and produce vitamins. They also can help with immunity, making the body less hospitable to the bad bacteria and other produce harmful pathogens. When considering all the strains of bacteria that exist, relatively few are capable of creating people sick.
