Hippocampal Neurons

The hippocampus may be a major component of the brain of humans and other vertebrates. Humans and different mammals have 2 hippocampi, one in each side of the brain. The hippocampus is an element of the limbic system, and plays vital roles within the consolidation of knowledge from short-term memory to long-term memory, and in spatial memory that allows navigation. The hippocampus is located under the cerebral cortex within the allocortex, and in primates it's within the medial temporal lobe. It contains 2 main interlocking parts: the hippocampus correct (also referred to as Ammon's horn)and also the dentate gyrus.
