Haemochromatosis Scholarly Peer-Review Journal
Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition caused by excessive absorption of dietary iron by the intestines, resulting in a pathological rise in total stores of body iron. Like most animals , humans have no means of excreting excess iron. It is an inherited condition where iron levels in the body build up slowly over many years. This build-up of iron can cause unpleasant symptoms, called iron overloads. When not treated, this can affect body parts such as the liver, knees, pancreas and heart. Iron deficiency can be caused by conditions such as thalassemia (a genetic blood disorder), anemia, chronic alcoholism, etc. Nevertheless, in many cases iron overload is the product of an inherited disease, which means that it is passed on via their genes from parents to children. Symptoms are similar to the complications that occur from iron overload such as diabetes, skin darkening, irregular heart rhythm or arthritis.
