Gas Hydrates

Gas Hydrates are ice-like crystalline minerals/natural resources that are formed while low molecular weight gas (such as carbon dioxide, ethane or methane) combines with water and freezes into a solid under low temperature and moderate pressure conditions. Gas hydrates are significant for three reasons: They may contain a major energy resource. It may be a significant hazard because it alters sea floor sediment stability, influencing collapse and landsliding. Gas hydrates are found along most continental shelf and slope regions and in many permafrost areas. Hydrates have also been found in inland seas (e.g., Caspian Sea and Black Sea) and in fresh water lakes (Lake Baikal).
