Evolution is change within the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. These features are the expressions of genes which are passed on from parent to offspring by reproduction process. Different characteristics tend to exist within any given population as a results of mutation, genetic recombination and other sources of genetic variation. Evolution occurs when processes of evolutionary like survival (which includes sexual selection) and genetic drift act on this variation, leading to certain characteristics becoming more rare or common inside a population. It is this process of evolution which has given rise to biodiversity at almost every level of biological organisation, including the amount of species, individual organisms and molecules.

In biology, evolution is that the change within the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the method of survival. The theory of evolution is predicated on the thought that each one species are related and gradually change over time.

Evolution occurs when these heritable differences become more rare or common during a population, either randomly through genetic drift or non-randomly through survival.
