Esophago-Gastric Junction

The gastro esophageal intersection (not an anatomic sphincter) is at the middle, and the stomach is at the right. The esophagogastric intersection is a muscle, not a mucosal, intersection. The boundary of the esophagus is at the upper esophageal sphincter and lower esophageal sphincter (LES) at the oral and anal ends, respectively. The esophagogastric junction lies at distal end of the LES. The gastro esophageal junction (GEJ) regulates the flow of food and fluid between the esophagus and the stomach and is the key defense against gastro esophageal reflux. Gastrointestinal Pathology is a normal esophagus with the usual white to tan smooth mucosa seen at the left.
