Ecology overlaps with the closely related sciences of evolutionary biology, genetics, and ethology. An important focus for ecologists is to improve the understanding of how biodiversity affects ecological function. Many include the biodiversity, distribution, biomass, and populations of organisms, as well as cooperation and competition within and between species. Global biodiversity is a key for ecosystem functioning, human well-being, 17 declining at an unprecedented rate of over 100 times the normal rate prevailing between previous mass 18 extinctions. Biodiversity is an essential to agriculture and human well-being, but it is declining at an unprecedented 5 rate. Including biodiversity in environmental assessments is due to its intrinsic complexity, scale issues and the significant difficulty is associated with reducing biodiversity.
