An irreversible loss of tooth structure due to chemical dissolution by acids not of bacterial origin is defined as Dental erosion. It is the most common chronic disease of children ages 5–17. Erosion may be caused by intrinsic and/or extrinsic factors. Soft drinks, particularly carbonated sodas and sports drinks, appear to be the most significant extrinsic cause of erosion. Drinks containing high concentrations of calcium, like milk, may reduce risk of erosion.
