Cloning vector is a small piece of the stable DNA into which a external DNA fragment can be inserted for cloning purposes. There are many types of cloning vectors, the most commonly used is genetically engineered plasmids. Cloning is generally first performed by using Escherichia coli, and cloning vectors in E. coli consists of plasmids, bacteriophages, cosmids, and bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs).
