Bronchoalveolar lavage has added wide recognition as a process which will be achieved safely to recover respiratory secretions for the inspection of cellular and acellular components for both diagnostic and research determinations. When Bronchoalveolar lavage was initially developed as a tool to sample respiratory secretions in animal models of lung disease and subsequently adapted as a clinical tool to review interstitial lung disease (ILD), it had been perceived as holding considerable promise for the diagnosis and management of varied sorts of interstitial lung disease, like sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Indeed, many articles are published within the medical literature over the following decades as various centres round the world began to use Bronchoalveolar lavage to spot agents of respiratory infections and examine correlates of changes within the composition of the airspace milieu related to the presence of noninfectious parenchymal lung diseases.
