9. AAL-toxin

AAL toxin is defined as a host-specific toxin, toxic to tomato, where as fumonisin B1 causes equine leukoencephalomalacia. FB1 and FB2 were biologically active in the susceptible tomato tissue (Earlypak-7) and animal tissue culture (rat hepatoma H4TG and dog kidney MDCK). Phytotoxins and mycotoxins are produced by fungal plant pathogens are commonly low molecular weight secondary metabolites that exert toxic effects on host plants and animals, respectively. Among the phytotoxins, host-specific toxins (HSTs) are critical determinants of pathogenicity or virulence in several plant pathogen interactions. The AAL-toxin and fumonisin are structurally similar and were originally isolated from the tomato pathotype of Alternaria alternata (synonym A. alternata f. sp. lycopersici, synonym A. arborescens) and from Gibberella moniliformis.
