Vortex Ring Formation New Research Articles

Vortex rings are generated by discharging water from a  circular tube of 56.5 mm inner diameter through an orifice into a trans-parent perspex tank of internal dimensions 1100 mm x 500 mm x 500 mm using a  piston. The end of the tube is mounted flush with the inner wall of the tank. The tank is filled with mains supply water initially at rest. The driving mechanism for the piston is a micro-step compute  controlled stepper motor with a position encoder directly coupled to the shaft. This configuration allows the discharge mean velocity and the piston face position to be controlled. The distance from the piston face to the inside wall of the tank at the end of the stroke is varied from zero to a distance equal to three times the piston diameter.
