Telomerase Open Access Journal

Telomerase, also known as terminal transferase, could be a ribonucleo protein that adds a species-dependent end repeat sequence to the 3' end of telomeres. A telomere could be a region of repetitive sequences at each finish of eukaryotic chromosomes in most eukaryotes. Telomeres protect the top of the chromosome from DNA harm or from fusion with neighbour chromosomes. The pomace fly drosophila melanogaster lacks telomerase, however instead uses retrotransposons to maintain telomeres.[2]

Telomerase could be a reverse transcriptase catalyst that carries its own RNA molecule (e.g., with the sequence 3′-CCCAAUCCC-5′ in Trypanosoma brucei)[3] that is used as a templet once it elongates telomeres. telomerase is active in gametes and most cancer cells, however is generally absent from, or at very low levels in, most somatic cells.
