Spontaneus Hemoperitoneum
Spontaneous hemoperitoneum is defined as the presence of blood within the peritoneal cavity that is unrelated to trauma. It may be idiopathic or related to spontaneous rupture of either a known or an unknown pathology. It is an uncommon condition that is usually heralded by abdominal pain, often severe. Spontaneous hemoperitoneum is an uncommon explanation for acute abdominal pain. When it occurs, it may be catastrophic. There are a myriad of causes for spontaneous hemoperitoneum and an underlying cause should be searched for if the patient survives the initial event. Hemoperitoneum (also haemoperitoneum, sometimes also hematoperitoneum) is that the presence of blood within the greater peritoneal sac . The blood accumulates within the space between the inner lining of the wall and therefore the internal abdominal organs. Hemoperitoneum is usually classified as a surgical emergency; in most cases, urgent laparotomy is required to spot and control the source of the bleeding. In selected cases, careful observation may be permissible. The abdomen is very distensible and should easily hold greater than five liters of blood, or quite the whole circulating blood volume for an average-sized individual. Therefore, large-scale or rapid blood loss into the abdomen will reliably induce hemorrhagic shock and, if untreated, may rapidly cause death.
