It is based on recent developments in the manufacture and use of self-assembled photonic crystals (PCs) concerning organic and polymer materials, such as chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) and colloidal crystals (CCs), as laser applications. Both chiral liquid crystals and colloidal crystals contains a intrinsic capabilities to spontaneously assemble 1D-PC and 3D-PC structures, respectively. At a periodic length in the PC structures of CLCs and CCs compares to several hundred nanometers, The photonic band-gaps (PBGs) of the light wavelength can be visualized as Bragg reflection colours. While combining fluorescence dyes in the chiral liquid crystals with colloidal crystals, optical excitation may generate the stimulated laser action at the edge(s) of the PBG band or between the wavelength of the PBG.
