Polymyxins
Polymyxins are well-established antibiotics that have recently regained considerable interest due to the growing occurrence of Gram-negative infections due to multidrug-resistant bacteria. In certain places where multidrug resistance is found in clinical medicine, colistin and polymyxin B are seriously reconsidered as the last-resort antibiotics. In contrast, the heavy use of polymyxins is currently being reconsidered in veterinary medicine due to increased reports of polymyxin-resistant bacteria. Susceptibility research is difficult with polymyxins, and present techniques that are currently available here. It presents genotypical and phenotypic methods which provide relevant information for laboratories of diagnosis.
