Polyhydroxy Alkanoates

Polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHAs are biodegradable, compostable thermoplastic polyesters biosynthesized in nature by numerous microorganisms such as bacterial fermentation fed by inexpensive oils derived from the seeds of plants such as canola, soy, and palm. When produced by bacteria they serve as both as a carbon store and source of energy. PHAs are widely used for various biomedical applications, including tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery, due to their excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility. The first and mostly used PHA is poly (β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). PHAs are gentle enough to be used every day by most skin types. Natureworks, a company based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, is one of the world's leading manufactures of bioplastics.
