Pharmacogenomics Goals
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genetic factor affect a person’s reaction to medications. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of inheritable factor and their purposes) to mature effective, safe medicines and doses that will be custom-made to a person’s hereditary makeup. Many drugs that are presently available are “one size fits all,” but they don't work the same way for everybody. It can be difficult to forecast who will benefit from a suppository, who will not respond at all, and who will involvement negative side properties (called adverse drug reactions). Adverse drug responses are a significant cause of hospitalizations and deceases in the United States. With the information gained from the Human Genome Project, investigators are learning how inherited alterations in genes affect the body’s answer to medicines. These genetic variances will be used to forecast whether a prescription will be effective for a specific person and to help prevent antagonistic drug reactions.
