Oligodendrocytes Journals

In the central systema nervosum (CNS), oligodendrocytes (OLs) are the glial-subtype liable for myelin production. The Oligodendrocytes diminutive size belies the size of myelin membrane produced, membrane capable of en-sheathing lots of axons in several layers, however contracting and ejecting cytoplasm to get mature myelin. Today, we take this data without any consideration. It’s easy to forget that until the mid-1950s, many researchers believed the medullary sheath to be an axonal creation, and not the natural product of glia (Geren and Raskind, 1953; Geren, 1954). This notion that glia played second fiddle unfortunately persisted. Often viewed as little quite “glue” holding the system nervosum together, OLs have had difficulty in ridding themselves of this namesake and driving interest within the scientific community. Researchers have only recently begun to really dissect and understand this unique cell type. Advances in imaging technology and model systems have permitted scientists unprecedented admission to the inner workings of the Oligodendrocytes.
