While the majority of health issues of newborns can be handled by the pediatrician, a neonatologist is trained specifically to treat the most difficult and high risk circumstances.If a newborn is premature, or have a severe illness , injury, or birth defect, a neonatologist may assist  newborn at the time of delivery and in following treatment. When an issue is detected before baby is born, a neonatologist can get involved during  pregnancy to work with obstetrician in the care of  baby.Neonatologists usually operate in hospital special care nurseries or neonatal intensive care units. For certain cases, a neonatologist can provide outpatient, short-term follow-up treatment after a newborn has been discharged from the unit.  neonatologist will coordinate the treatment with the pediatrician for infant.
