Natural Killer T Cells

The Natural killer T (NKT) cells are a heterogeneous group of T cells. These NKT cells has properties of both T cells and natural killer cells. NKT cells are lymphocytes that express both a T-cell receptor (TCR), characteristic of adaptive immunity, and surface receptors for NK cells, which are part of the innate immune response. These cells influence diverse immune responses, including the surveillance for tumours, the maintenance of self-tolerance and the regulation of autoimmune diseases. Many of those cells recognize the non-polymorphic CD1d molecule, an antigen-presenting molecule that binds self and foreign lipids and glycolipids. They constitute only 0.1% of all peripheral blood T cells, approximately. Natural killer T cells shouldn't be confused with natural killer cells.
