Green Algae

green algae consist of the Chlorophyta and Charophyta which are  placed together with the more basal Mesostigmatophyceae, Chlorokybophyceae and Spirotaenia. The land plants, or embryophytes, are emerged from the charophytes. Therefore, embryophytes belong to green algae because the embryophytes are traditionally classified as algae or green algae which belongs to  paraphyletic group. Since the realization that the embryophytes emerged from green algae are starting to include them. This includes both green algae and embryophytes  which are referred to as the clade Viridiplantae and as the kingdom Plantae.  There are about 8,000 species of green algae. Many  of them live as single cells, while other species form long filaments, or highly differentiated macroscopic seaweeds.
