Gene Regulation Open Access Articles

Gene regulation is the process of controlling which genes in a cell's DNA are expressed (used to make a functional product which is a protein). Different cells during a multicellular organism may express very different sets of genes, albeit they contain an equivalent DNA.

Example: Enzyme induction is a process in which a molecule induces the expression of an enzyme. The induction of heat shock proteins in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The Lac operon is a stimulating example of how organic phenomenon are often regulated.

Gene regulation is a crucial a part of normal development. Genes are turned on and off in several patterns during development to form a nerve cell look and act different from a liver cell or a muscle fiber , for instance . Gene regulation also allows cells to react quickly to make changes in their environments.

Gene expression is primarily controlled at the extent of transcription, largely as a results of binding of proteins to specific sites on DNA. ... The regulatory gene codes for synthesis of a repressor molecule that binds to the operator and blocks RNA polymerase from transcribing the structural genes.
