Epiglottis Scientific Journals
The epiglottis may be a leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located behind the tongue, at the highest of the larynx, or larynx. The most function of the epiglottis is to seal off the windpipe during eating, in order that food isn't accidentally inhaled. Epiglottitis is usually caused by an infection. Fever is usually seen in cases of infection. When an infection is present, treatment includes antibiotics. A breathing tube and ventilator could also be required in severe cases. The epiglottis is at the bottom of your tongue. It's made from mostly cartilage. It works as a valve to stop food and liquids from entering your windpipe, the proximity of the epiglottis to the taste bud allows the infant to feed and breathe at an equivalent time by sealing off the nasal airway. Epiglottis surgery is often used for treatment of obstructive apnea when the epiglottis plays a crucial role in blocking breathing. The epiglottis may be a flap of elastic cartilage that's covered with a mucosa and located at the basis of the tongue. Epiglottis reconstruction is especially and most ordinarily performed to stop abnormal swallowing and aspiration.
