Clinical Practice Reviews

Clinical practice guidelines are an increasingly essential driver of decisions about patient care. They have been described as “recommendations meant to optimize patient care that are notified by a systematic review of substantiation and an assessment of the advantages and harms of alternative care options” . Guidelines have traditionally been industrialized to simply provide direction for clinical decision making, but they are attractive embedded in the structure of UK primary care through their conversion into indicators of quality of care in a national “pay for performance” financial enticement scheme (the Quality and Results Framework) and through the growth of quality standards to inform decisions on health care preparation and commissioning.
